FAQS
HOW MANY SESSIONS SHOULD I SIGN UP FOR?
This is completely up to you! Many people meet with me once and then apply the concepts on their own time. Other people meet with me once a week, long term, or until they feel confident. We do not lock you in to a certain amount of sessions.
WILL I SEE RESULTS AFTER ONE LESSON?
You will see techniques at work within a session. However, behavior does not make long term changes in one hour. You must apply the techniques and with repeated practice to see long term changes.
WHAT WILL WE DO DURING A LESSON?
This depends on the behaviors that need to be worked on. Oftentimes, lessons involve a mix of both talking through problems, and running through hands on exercises. A trainer may take your dog to demonstrate various techniques and then give the dog back to you to practice. We strive to work in a way that is comfortable for you and the dog. Most training is done in a very incremental way where we slowly get closer to more difficult distractions.
WHERE SHOULD WE MEET FOR A LESSON?
We can meet wherever you need the most help. Anywhere is fair game. The most common locations are at home, at a park, or a trail. We have also had lessons at the lake, pet friendly stores, in people's cars etc.
WHO SHOULD BE PRESENT FOR THE LESSON?
That is completely up to you. We are more than happy to train with your whole family or anyone else you may want to be present. Whatever is realistic for you is what will be best for training. Many people are worried about having their children be too much of a distraction, but all members of the family are welcome!
IS MY DOG TOO YOUNG TO LEARN? TOO OLD?
There is no such thing! If you can find what motivates a dog, you can train! If your puppy is too young to go into public, meeting at your home is a good place to start.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO A LESSON?
Treats, a normal leash (no retractable leashes), cash or check for payment, and any tools you may want help learning how to use.
DO YOU TRAIN PROTECTION DOGS?
No. Due to liability reasons, we do not train protection dogs for members of the public.
DO YOU TRAIN SERVICE DOGS?
No. Service dog training is a specialty of its own and we can happily refer you to other trainers in the northwest.
DO YOU OFFER BOARD AND TRAINS?
I do not. Board and trains are the type of training program where a dog would stay with a trainer for a certain amount of time before returning to the owner. If you're in search of a board and train program in Helena, I don't believe there are many, if any at all. I can offer referrals to programs in other cities like Missoula or Bozeman.
